At the Hall of A Hundred Rivers

This will be the Canadian Premiere of Dr. Yang’s paintings
and feature film Feuille (Leaf). Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Dr. Yang in person at the opening reception
on Sunday, April 1st from 2:00pm to 4:30pm.

Dr. Youxin Yang was born in Xuzhou, China. After finishing her medical education in Nanjing, she received her Ph.D. with high honors from Paris University VI (Marie-Curie University). In 2001, she went to Harvard Medical School to continue her work in cancer research. Dr. Yang is a multi-talented artist and filmmaker who was the first female director to win the top Remi Award at the 37th Houston International Film Festival. Her passion for art is shown through all her works by uniting eastern and western cultures. Dr. Yang’s 2012 exhibit PEACE is a perfect example of cultural unity, and our Garden is delighted to provide a space that connects cultures and communities. (Photo credit: Xavier Ferreira)

On April 13, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden was the proud winner of the title “Canadian Garden Tourism Garden of the Year 2012” awarded by Canadian Garden Tourism Council, in consultation with a Canadian and international jury network. The Garden was awarded for providing a world-class garden experience as well as a significant cultural heritage to local and international visitors. The Council also acknowledged the Garden’s title of “World’s Top City Garden”, recently named by National Geographic.

The Garden’s Executive Director Kathy Gibler gratefully accepted the Award. Gibler said “We are so honored to be recognized in our own country as one of the top garden and cultural attractions. We are very touched to see that our efforts are enhancing our visitors' experience and promoting Vancouver to the world.”

The award was presented at the Annual Canadian and International Garden Tourism Awards Luncheon, sponsored by VIA Rail Canada and hosted by VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Garden Tourism Awards are presented to organizations and individuals who have distinguished themselves in the development and promotion of the garden experience as a tourism attraction.

“Gardens are among Canada’s premier tourism destinations, offering unique experiences and attracting visitors from our core and emerging markets,” said Michele McKenzie, President & CEO of the Canadian Tourism Commission as she presented the Awards. Dave Cowen, Chair of the B.C. Garden Tourism Coalition, and General Manager of Butchart Gardens closed the event saying, “Given the enormous number of Canadian and American travellers – almost 14 million annually, as quoted in the latest TAMS report — who include visiting Canadian gardens among the top ten things they want to do while on a holiday.”

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden is one of the
"Places That Matter" to Vancouverites

What a fantastic way to celebrate Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden’s 26th anniversary on April 24, 2012! The Garden received a special plaque from The Vancouver Heritage Foundation, marking the Garden as one of the 125 historic sites that matters to Vancouverites.

Places That Matter is a plaque project celebrating the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Vancouver. The Vancouver Heritage Foundation went through a public nomination process in 2011, then brought together a group of local historians, artists, and heritage consultants etc. to finalize the 125 locations.

The Garden is the second site that received this plaque. It was honored to have Geoff Meggs (Deputy Mayor, City of Vancouver), Shirley Chan (President of the Board, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden), and Diane Switzer (Executive Director, The Vancouver Heritage Foundation) to present this meaningful moment to the public. The plaque will be proudly displayed at the Garden.
