In collaborations with the Vancouver Chinese Classical Garden, the Vancouver Chinese Instrumental Music Society is proud to present Plucking Strings on June 5, 2011. This concert will feature plucked stringed instruments from around the world.
Jirong Huang, musical director of the Vancouver Chinese Music ensemble will be working with the ensemble and guest musicians to showcase Chinese pipa, ruan, Indian sitar, western guitar and Vietnamese dan bau.

The night’s program will emceed by renowned linguist, Jan Walls, giving context to a display of an unconventional arrangement of instruments. Each will be presented in solo performance, performing an array of technique and skill to traditional songs and together, they will showcase new innovative works and improvised music.

Shin Do Self Defense focuses on two aspects of safety: mind and body. In learning the mind techniques for staying calm and coll during tense moments you can help yourself remain clear minded in situations of potential harm. Learn how to fend off an attacker using simple daily objects, use body-language to relay confidence, build mental and physical awareness in mind and body.
About the Instructor: Lothar Zahler
Lothar is a complementary health professional with over 40 years’ experience in European herbal medicines, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Martial arts. Since the age of 4, he has studied with many great Eastern Masters and is a Lineage Holder in Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Qi Gong, Kung Fu, Daoism, Meditation and Feng Shui. He is experienced in acupressure and Tuina massage (the massage system of Traditional Chinese Medicine). He is also a certified Naturopathic healer in Germany.
Lothar studied Theravada Buddhism and Meditation and lived as a Monk in both Sri Lanka and Thailand.
With great love and faith, Lothar believes in returning goodness to the community he resides in. He looks forward to sharing the wisdom he’s gained throughout his lifetime with those in Canada, his new home.

The North American Association of Asian Professionals Vancouver (NAAAP), this is an intercultural dialogue on sustainability - a critical issue that impacts all of our cultural leaders and communities here in Vancouver.
The next generation of professionals, entrepreneurs and thinkers is being instilled with behavourial changes towards sustainability as a core value, and organizations & communities will need to adapt in order to stay relevant to these people today.
At this intercultural dialogue, we will delve into these questions, and how sustainability relates to traditions and cultures in our communities, and how your organization, community and business can start partnerships and develop action plans to manage resources effectively to achieve goals.
This is a great opportunity to meet young Asian community leaders and professionals who are engaged in progressive social and cultural issues that impact our communities today.

Presented by Seven Tyrants Theatre, this is a unique opportunity to enjoy one of 20th century's greatest plays in Vancouver's secret Garden.
A Good Woman of Setzuan is a re-imagining of Bertolt Brecht’s musical parable about the struggle to live a moral life in a society corrupted by greed and selfishness. Drawing from several translations of Brecht’s original German tale, the production features an original musical score and choreography performed live by the multi-talented cast.
