Penjing Exhibition

May 14-15, 2011
10am-6pm

Included w/ Admission

Classical Chinese gardens often contain arrangements of miniature trees and rockeries known as penjing. These creations of carefully pruned trees and rocks are small-scale renditions of the natural landscape. The cultivation of penjing has been a popular Chinese art form for centuries.

The Exhibition: Join us on May 14 & 15 and learn how to create or improve your own penjing - for beginners and masters alike. The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden’s Penjing Club are available to answer questions.

Special Demonstration: Sunday, May 15 at 2:00pm. Well-known horticulturists and penjing masters, Roy Forster and Pin Lee, will introduce penjing, show specimen in various stages of training, introduce suitable pots and demonstrate the correct manner of potting up a new plant.

Media: To set up interviews with the penjing masters, please contact Claudette Martin at 604-662-3207 ext 205 or at education@vancouverchinesegarden.com

Harmony

The Art of James Tan

May 1 - 31, 2011
Ongoing

James Tan has travelled and displayed his works around the world, from the commercial metropolis of Singapore to the hot sands of the United Arab Emirates. His works have been purchased by a huge variety of international clients, including Malaysia’s Penang Museum and Dubai’s Foreign Office. Honours and awards include the First Prize in the Singapore National Art Competition and the prestigious role of representing Singapore at a Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs 1988 art exhibition. He has also lectured at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London and at the Vancouver Academy of Art.

His inspiration stems mainly from the late 19th and early 20th century artist movement in China known as the New National Painting style, and later as the Lingnan School. James took this distinctive style of revival and rebirth and moved it into the new millennium, applying these prior principles to more contemporary settings and subjects.
