Presented by the Canadian Society for Asian Art Carter-Harmon Collection

September 28 - November 6 | 10am - 4:30pm Daily
Entrance Included in Admission, FREE for Garden Members

Exhibit Reception: Thursday, October 13 | 2-4pm

The folk masks from Asia & Pacific Rim regions were collected mostly from shops, street stalls and maker's studios. A diverse range of masks, some dating from the late 1800s were collected during visits to the Americas, Northern and Southern Asia, Oceania from the 1960s onward.

The emergence of Asia & Pacific Rim cultures and economies in recent decades have had a dramatic impact on the society of British Columbia and the rest of Canada. The exhibition will, hopefully, contribute to better communication with and understanding among our Asia & Pacific neighbours.

Masks selected for the exhibtioin reflect a wealth of form, symbols, materials, dimensions and creative inventiveness. Included are masks that were paraded in street festivals and others used in religious processions. Some were used in traditional storytelling theatre and dance, often celebrating the seasons, harvests, and others special occasions. Certain masks reflect social and political realities, often taking on the role of social moderator or representatives of order and justice.

The exhibition provides a glimpse of the unlimited expression and beauty of Asia & Pacific masks and may contribute to the continuation of the traditional and the creation of new ones.

WARNING: NOT for young children or the faint of heart!

This Halloween the Garden will transform into a theatrical haunted setting by Seven Tyrants Theatre for a traditional Chinese detective story featuring Judge Dee.  This famous Judge, hero of many novels, was based on a real crime solver in 7th century Tang Dynasty.

Imagine this: the storm outside is the heaviest in years. You wind along a steep mountain trail. Suddenly, your cart breaks. With a flash of lightening you glance at the foreboding hillside.

It looks like you'll have to spend the night in the Haunted Monastery. But three women died mysteriously there only last year...

Will you make it out alive? Can you and Judge Dee solve the case before the next victim meets her gruesome fate?

Brave the Garden's haunted pathways, uncover important clues, then warm your bones with tea, wine & spooky snacks at the old "Risky Sip Tea House" as you try to piece together the crime.

How does it work?

  1. Pick your Judge Dee show date. Purchase your tickets at the door or over the phone.
  2. Show up anytime between 7 and 10pm. We will let in audiences of 10 every 10 minutes.
  3. Enjoy! The exprience is roughly 30 minutes. Follow the path without pausing or seek refuge awhile halfway through in the old Tea House where strange delicacies await. Your ticket is valid for the whole evening, so if you make it out alive you can always line up to enter again.

Who was Judge Dee?

Judge Dee was a famous detective in Tang Dynasty China. Inspired by the stories celebrating his impeccable record of catching crooks, 20th Century author Robert van Gulik wrote a series of original murder mysteries featuring Judge Dee - China's Sherlock Holmes. Judge Dee is now the subject of a major motion picture "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame".

This Halloween, SOLVE THE MYSTERY...if you dare!
