Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio
Paintings and Drawings by Jessica Jang
September 3rd – 25th, 2011
Reception: Thursday, September 8th | 7pm – 9pm
Facebook Event
Local visual artist Jessica Jang investigates the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in this exhibition created specifically in dialogue with the historical, contemporary and imagined spaces of the Garden. Inspired by the folklore of P’u Sung-Ling, Chinese myths, documented occurrences during the construction of the Garden and observational drawings, the viewer is encouraged to discover new entry ways into exploring the functionality of the Garden through the stories invoked in these works.
Jessica Jang was born in Vancouver, Canada where she currently resides. Since completing her undergraduate studies at Chelsea College of Art and Design and Emily Carr University, she has lived and worked in London, United Kingdom and Madrid, Spain. Jang has exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Terrace Annual 2010, Hackney WickED Art Festival, and earlier this year held a solo exhibition at Little Mountain Gallery.
Jang’s visual art exhibition in the Hall of One Hundred Rivers will be complemented by multi-disciplinary artist HyungMin Yoon’s site-specific installation made for the pond at the garden, Heaven and Earth, a floating piece inspired by the 6th century BC Taoist saying that extends the aesthetic experience out into the Garden itself.
HyungMin Yoon was born in Seoul, Korea and studied Fine Art at Korean National University of Arts in Seoul (BFA) and Chelsea College of Art in London (MFA). Yoon's works have been shown internationally in exhibitions such as à ses parents – Variations autour de Le Corbusier (Switzerland, 2006) and The truth of Contradictions and exceptions (South Korea, 2009). She has recently participated in art residency program at The Banff Centre in Canada (2009) and at The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists (SÍM) in Iceland (2009).

Ikebana Flower Arrangement Exhibition

Demonstration: September 24 & 25
@ 1pm
Entrance included in admission
FREE for Garden Members
Presented by members of several important schools in the Vancouver Ikebana Association, this annual exhibition will showcase the original ideas expressed in Ikebana.
The word "Ikebana" comes from bana, meaning flower, and ikeru, meaning to place or arrange. While both shallow and tall containers are used, arrangements stress the artful use of line and space. It has been likened to sculpture as compared with western design. The symbolism of the passage of time is important. Full blooms, pods or dried leaves symbolize the past. Half-open blossoms or leaves suggest the present. Buds suggest the future. Water is also a very important element in Ikebana, as is space. Ikebana is never crowded. Sometimes table space is used, as when a branch reaches down to rest on the table, thus creating a space complimentary to the design.
There are two styles in Ikebana design: one aims to seek the beauty in nature and arrange as it is, and the other is to produce an imaginative scene. Both will be featured in the exhibition.
Demonstrations:
Saturday: by Cecily Chang
Sunday: by Linda Achiam. Sogetsu School.
Linda Achiam reflects, “To me, Sogetsu Ikebana is not simply a floral arrangement or love of nature. It is an art form involving the use of unconventional material. Nature may then become the secondary subject. Like any other kind of art work, there is no limit in its learning and practice. “
