The Vancouver Haiku Group (VHG) will launch their first anthology, The Jade Pond, at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, on Saturday, January 20. The event will include haiku readings, live music, and a discussion by Group members on Chinese cultural symbolism within the poems. The launch will run from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Hall of One Hundred Rivers. Tea and light snacks will be available.
Four years ago, a magical, rainy Garden ginkgo (a haiku walk) inspired many of The Jade Pond authors. A workshop in the Hall of One Hundred Rivers, more workshops in the Main Hall, Garden-themed writing exercises, and sequential visits to the Garden sparked the Group’s creativity. The docents taught the poets about the culture and symbolism of the scholar’s garden, and the collection reflects this learning, along with moments of personal contemplation.
The Group hopes The Jade Pond persuades haiku poets to explore the natural and cultural histories of their communities, motivates new poets to take up haiku, and entices people to visit the Garden.
