Opening Reception: Saturday, August 5, 2017 | 4:00–6:00 p.m. | Artist in Attendance
Nature plays a special role in the Chinese cultural tradition. It is the gateway between heaven and earth, in which ancient scholars and literati found inspiration for art. The same appreciation for nature is embedded in Water Poon’s artwork, especially in his landscape paintings. A contemporary artist, photographer, and film director, Poon paints in an expressive style that is rich in the literati temperament of traditional Chinese art.
The watercolour and ink paintings featured in the Landscape exhibition are inspired by the natural beauty of Guilin, China, an idyllic city famous for its karst topography and riverscape. Poon’s loose brush stroke and limited use of colour capture the stillness and serenity of Guilin from dawn to dusk. The rhythmical movement of the brush creates a sense of depth that contrasts with the minimalistic composition of human-made structures and natural elements.
For Poon, the presence of nature in his works is not merely about depicting rocks, trees, and water but rather finding harmony within contrasting spaces. One common thread in his diverse body of work is his continuous “rediscovery” of nature within the ever-changing urban environment. The paintings in Landscape liberate the audience from the complexity of city life and reconnect with our inner self, encouraging us to appreciate nature, like traditional Chinese literati did.
